Today was my first session with the student. We went through a 30-question test to see what she had covered before. We then reviewed question words and conversed for about 15 minutes in Spanish. For the remainder of the session, I explained -ar verbs in the present and the student did activities to practice them. I then briefly explained "gustar" and we discussed plans for the next session. I will be sending her links to activities to practice what we covered. The student asked me to emphasize pronunciation in the future too.

Saturdays are going to be vocabulary building days, whereas Thursdays are going to be homework days per mom's request. This lesson we reviewed our verbs. We also reviewed the labels around the house we put up during out previous vocabulary lesson. We added ten more vocabulary words around the house and practiced finding them when I ask. He is retaining the words quickly!

The student's teacher assigned her chapters 5-8 over Thanksgiving break. We spent our whole time working on chapter 5 sections which covered Spanish numbers up to 30.

We took a practice test today. She got almost half correct on the material. I have seen her score better and perform better on previous test and drills. She needs to use the next two days to focus on listening on the exam. When she listens and is confident in her answer choices and does not second guess herself, she gets more answers correct. We reviewed verb tenses, some of the questions she missed and talked about how important some basic vocabulary recognition will be. She takes the exam Tuesday.

The student didn't have any homework, but he mentioned a test coming up on food vocabulary which we've worked on a bit. He has a lot of vocabulary and phrases to cover. He and I reviewed some vocabulary, especially by making a food pyramid in Spanish. We finished up the lesson by returning to some stem-changing verbs, in particular "doler" and the worksheet we had begun.

This was definitely a successful session. The student and I reviewed food vocabulary and did some more little skits involving ordering at a restaurant, bar, or cafe. Then we moved on to travel vocabulary, especially involving visiting cities. We started looking at giving and receiving directions, but this is a very thorny, complicated issue, and we'll definitely have to revisit it next time.
