Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered the following this evening: 1) Writing out third declension endings for masculine and feminine Latin nouns. 2) Declining nouns in third declension, all five cases, singular and plural. 3) Reviewing indirect statements in Latin and contrasting the statements in English with the Latin. The student's attitude toward the material that was reviewed was good. He is proud of the fact that he now has a B in this course and has worked very hard this year. I acknowledge that he has put a lot of effort into the course. I suggested that he look over his endings right before he takes the quiz tomorrow to refresh his memory."
"We finished up lesson 2, and the students have a really strong grasp on present tense verbs in the first conjugation. Their vocabulary list is growing very quickly, so I made sure to go through vocabulary with them, as well as doing a bit of vocab review from last chapter. Perhaps the greatest difficulty is the grammar, so I will need to spend some time with that. We ended today's session with the Pater Noster (Our Father). I then had them listen to Adestes Fideles (O Come All Ye Faithful) with words on the screen to follow along. I think I will try to do a song at the end of session because they seemed to truly enjoy it."
"We spent much of the session preparing for the student's test tomorrow. Except for the English to Latin translation, as usual, his answers on the practice test were immediate and accurate. He simply needs to keep his wits about him on that one difficult section! We did have enough time to preview his homework -- he will need a bit more information from class and online notes to complete it."
"We were able to go over her questions from the test and practice the Ablative case with all her new vocab. She seems a lot clearer on what and why the Ablative case is now. We also walked through the 3rd declension vocab in an attempt to start to tackle the unpredictable nature of the 3rd declension Nominative case. I think she has the sense of it, but we will definitely practice a lot more next week. Next week, we'll practice more translating sentences, using prepositional phrases and all 3 declensions."
"We will need to continue to work on translation. He does well with verb conjugation. We went over verbs today. However, he did not have his books today, and I strongly recommend that he come prepared to each session in the future. Other than that, he worked hard today and paid attention to me as we worked on some challenging translations."
"A big piece of this lesson was about following up on the student's homework and seeing how he had done. It's safe to say he did not spend much time on it but was also able to get a considerable amount done in the little time he did spend. He has demonstrated an impressive capacity for memory. The issues are in developing focus and harboring his excitement. He wasn't able to organize his own efforts very well, and so was largely unprepared, but he is curious and retains knowledge well, so he is in a very good place. For our next lesson, he has a second homework set that will prove a follow up to the skills we tested/discussed over this last two weeks. Some important decisions on our goals and curriculum can be made following this."
