"We discussed the feedback she got from her teacher and went over some tips for how to approach revising an essay. I pointed out that it is great that she can critique her own writing, but the next step is to critique her own writing and then make the changes before handing it in."
"The student and I continue to make excellent progress at achieving our goal of enhancing his critical thinking skills and his persuasive writing techniques. In this session, he and I worked on a sample SAT essay question. We began by going over the steps one should take when approaching an essay, and then executed these steps. The question we worked on was a tricky one, but he handled it deftly! We constructed a concept map for his argument and worked hard at refining and revising it until it was in perfect form. He really started to see when his arguments fell a little short, and was able to amend his ideas. This is not an easy skill, and really demonstrates that he is becoming a keen critical thinker and writer! I am very pleased with his progress!"
"The student had the assignment to write a chapter for As I Lay Dying in the voice and from the perspective of one of the characters. To get her started I asked her questions about characterization and character motivation, as well as her goals for the chapter. I helped her brainstorm ways to begin the chapter and gave her on-going feedback and suggestions as she was writing. I also helped her to keep tone, diction, and overall voice in mind to portray the character."
"Today, we continued with additional medical terminology. We covered 30 new vocabulary anatomical terms/ words. Also, we continued covering new irregular verbs, tenses (infinitive, present, present progressive, future, past, and past participle). I illustrated with practical examples of verbs used in sentences. We added 8 new verbs. We also conjugated personal pronouns and covered examples of common expressions. We worked on general vocabulary, pronunciation skills, and spelling."
"The student and I worked on the marketing essay that we outlined last week. She already had a good portion of it done. She was to submit the paper for preview by midnight and was stressed because it wasn't done and she still had other homework to do. We talked about how she could submit the essay even if it wasn't perfect since it was just a preview and not worth a grade. She needs to work on not second-guessing herself and not worrying about every assignment needing to be perfect. We will continue to work on that."
"Today, the student and I worked on English homework. He was given assignments on past and present participles and participial phrases. He was given sentences and asked to label the participle and underline the entire phrase. Out of about 15-20 questions, he only needed help with 3 or 4. He did well and seemed to grasp all the concepts, and I'm pleased with his results."
