"We began with my lecture on argument analysis and how it informs understanding the types of questions asked, as well as improving mapping and reading actively. After that, we went through a humanities passage. The student began to integrate the concepts of mapping, sentence deconstruction, and using context to identify words. The student has an assessment-prep-in-a-box system at home. She will continue to read and practice from that. I will also forward her some short chapters on the theory of going through the verbal section, with some included problems. We have planned to meet next time to continue our discussion of verbal."
"Today the student and I continued going over how to read test questions and how to properly select answer choices by going over four more med school entrance exam verbal passages. The first two I had him go through on his own and discuss with me his thinking process. Following this, I offered to go through a passage with him exactly as I would approach it, from what my thoughts were on each paragraph to how I eliminated and selected answer choices. He found this very helpful, and thinks that this will help him cut down on answer time, which is where he needs to work on now since his passage reading time and passage comprehension has already been substantially increased."
"I met with the student today to start his training for the med school exam. He didn't have any material on hand so we spent a lot of time discussing his study schedule for the next few months. We're going to start from the beginning, going over chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and biology, in that order. We worked on his verbal performance by going over three passages. He got 15 out of 18 questions correct, which was pretty good. His logic and test-taking ability were sound. He said he needed structure in his study schedule and I told him to take notes and keep a study journal during this cycle. He will most likely get the review material this week. I told him to take notes and take the lecture exam on the first section of the chemistry review book, and keep practicing the verbal section while he was at it. I will take a good look at how he is studying for the test and make sure that his habits are good. We will meet on Thursday next week, and work on a more stable tutoring schedule for the upcoming days."
"This evening, the student used the tutoring company's online materials to practice defining vocabulary words using their context. The "flash cards" offered practice in specialized vocabulary from the Humanities. The selections were taken from various speeches, novels, and other sources, many dating from the 19th century and earlier. The sentences were lengthy and complex, and often used a target word's secondary meaning. She kept a list of words she was not familiar with for further study."
"Today, we went over a few physics concepts, including Bernoulli's, buoyancy, density, sound, intensity/decibels, Snell's law, and total internal reflection. We then planned our next session. As always, I'm available by email for any questions the student may have."
"We looked at diagnostic number 6 on verbal reasoning, and discussed the nature of CARS. We looked at passages and debated answer choices. Passages included a passage about bees by Mark Twain and a passage about the development of the electric telegraph. Then we looked at biology diagnostic number 6, and then we looked at a passage-based question on biology."
