Today we worked on impersonal verbs and case use. We addressed the different uses of nominatives, accusatives, ablatives, datives, and genitives. The most trouble came from ablative and deciphering the use of ablative of means, ablative of manner, and ablative of agent. We completed a quiz and identified the case use from the translation. I helped her study for her test over these grammar topics. She has improved on vocabulary and translating passages quicker with a better comprehension level.

Today, we focused to a certain extent on vocabulary since the student has to retake a quiz. We re-categorized the list to bring out patterns in the nouns and verbs; I recommended that she go through her flashcards and study them according to these patterns (I'm sending the re-categorized list via email). The patterns should make studying much easier. We ended the lesson by going over the endings of deponent verbs, and used the practice grammar exercises as a means to review definitions from the vocabulary list as well. She definitely will need to continue to study the words more with her flashcards, and I will send a worksheet to continue practice with the deponent vocabulary words.

Following a brief review of different types of uses of the subjunctive, we spent this session exclusively on practice sentences drawn from the student's text, and supplemented with similar sentences from my own textbooks. The student is still rushing through his translations and makes assumptions about the meaning of the sentence that lead him astray. When he takes time to parse out the verb properly, which he is capable of, his translations become much better. This session I also noticed some occasions in which he gave nouns the wrong case - this is a symptom of the same problem. He just needs to take his time and put the sentence together thoughtfully. We will work on developing this skill more in the next session.
