"Today, we reviewed 42 questions from the practice test materials that I provided for the student. Most of the questions the student missed had to do with either choosing the "no change" option when it was incorrect, or choosing an incorrect answer when the correct answer was "no change." We focused on these questions, and will continue to do so; if he's able to get better at just this type of question, I feel that his score will improve dramatically! He has many questions to practice with for our next meeting; I asked that he continue with the English questions, and also prepare 1-2 reading and science passages."
"Today we jumped right into the last 30 math problems on Practice Test #5. She finished the Math section with 53 correct answers, 7 incorrect answers and no answers omitted. Her overall Math ACT score was a 33, which is 2 points more than the last time she took the Math section, and 6 points more than when she was taking the ACT prep course! Some areas that we will continue to work on include: distributive property, multi-step area problems, area of extra space, exponents, and altitude on a coordinate plane. Next the student and I talked about all the different strategies that she was used on each of the ACT sections and which ones work and don't work. We then talked about the reading section and how she was going to complete the first passage. She said that she wanted to read the whole passage and then answer the questions. She finished reading the first passage at 5 minutes and 30 seconds. She was appropriately underlining and making marks during her reading to better understand the information, was crossing out incorrect answers, going back and looking for answers when needed, and moving at a good speed. Next time we meet, we will skip around between the reading and science sections to finish the last full practice test. We will then go over any and all answers that the student may have gotten incorrect and work on some individual problems to help her increase her scores."
"Today, the student and I focused on the math section of the college entrance exam in order to get an idea of the area which we need to focus on in this section. The student needs to review geometry and trigonometry in particular."
"We worked on reducing fractions, multiplying/adding fractions, changing mixed numbers to improper fractions, adding/subtracting integers, math facts, long division, and test taking strategies. The student worked really hard! I was very impressed with her motivation to learn! She is a delight to work with! I know that she can do this!"
"We worked on solving systems of equations, rules of exponents, factoring trinomials, and multiplying trinomials. We decided that the fastest method for solving a system of equations would be combinations rather than graphing or substitution. We talked about skipping factoring questions and coming back to them at the end because they can take a lot of time in a test situation. I am going to send the student another SAT Math (No Calc) Diagnostic Test and an overall SAT diagnostic test for her to do this week."
"We worked on some puzzles today. The student showed appropriate responses by taking the puzzle pieces, frowning when he was unable to find the right space for the piece and getting excited when he was able to fix it."
