Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked through the following handouts: "Grammar Ex. 1 - Adjectives and Adverbs (she scored 28/30)", "Writing Ex. 1 - Using Metaphors", and "50 Quotes About English". She will read the following articles and write an essay on one of them for our next meeting: "25 Years After Tiananmen Square", "The Power of Two", "Microsoft Bets Big on Quantum Computing," and "Swimming" by Nicola Keegan". She will write her essay using the model we discussed in the review of "A Most Imperfect Union"."
"The student was introduced to new base words and suffixes and used his knowledge of these to decode unfamiliar words such as "portable" and "audiology". He also played a few rounds of irregular past tense bingo. He was able to successfully identify the present tense for each verb with little difficulty. We concluded with him editing a paragraph that he had written earlier."
"We covered basic parts of speech, identifying clause endings, coordinating conjunctions. We are reviewing the basic basics, so that we can do some heavier lifting with sentence structure."
"Today, the student and I discussed Aristotle's Rhetorical devices--ethos, pathos, logos--while finding examples in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech "I have a Dream." The student and I set up her homework for next session. She did excellent today; she paid close attention, asked questions, and found and analyzed examples. She is a joy to teach."
"Worked on the next 3 chapters of his book. He had to analyze quotes and detail their significance. We worked through them together and afterwards he worked on them independently."
"The concepts we covered were: spelling words, cvc words, and reading comprehension. He still struggles with e when reading cvc words. He often forgets the E's and y's when writing words."
