Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued to cover rules of exponents and how to simplify problems with exponents and multiple variables. I emphasized taking the problems step by step and focusing on one set of like values at a time."
"The student and I had a productive session today. We started by talking about converting from percent, to fraction, to decimal. I tried to show him that while percents are the easiest way for us to talk about parts of a whole number, we can't do math with percents! We HAVE to convert a percent to a decimal or a fraction before we do any math with it. He seemed to understand this well, and nearly always remembered to put a percent in fraction form before doing problems with it during the rest of the session. We also talked about a simple but hopefully effective strategy for avoiding calculator mistakes. I asked him to say each number out loud in his head as he typed it into the calculator. He did well with his 19 homework problems which covered the last three sections he learned in class. He appears to be understanding the concepts. I think we are making good progress!"
"We reviewed the entire chapter by going over a fifty question review assignment in preparation for a big test coming up. His attitude was positive toward the material. I did offer some strategies that I taught before for certain topics. No concerns from this session."
"The student and I covered problems related to area of various polygons. He has a good grasp on several concepts, but forgets to complete all the necessary steps, which may be related to his ability to organize his notes and the work he completes for each problem. This is what we have been working on, utilizing scratch paper to space out his work. We will continue to work on that."
"The student worked on his homework packet. He completed the math section which was comparing fractions with the same numerator and different denominator and fractions that equal one half. He demonstrated a good understanding of the strategies necessary to solve these problems. He also completed his reading assignment with questions. The skills practiced were inferring word meaning from context and comprehension. He always does well with vocabulary and is able to recall details from the reading. We completed our session playing a division game. He needs to continue to work on his multiplication and division facts to achieve instant recall."
"Today the student worked on his past due homework on subtracting fractions. He was great in catching the concept and following the steps. His math score has improved very much since last time and I think he will be even better on the next scoring."
