Today we focused almost exclusively on the Math section of the ACT. First, we discussed the last of the science portion of the practice test the student had taken. We then turned to the practice problems for the math section, taken from the ACT website. We spent the time working on these problems together. The student was generally able to complete the problems on his own, though there were also a few times that I had to remind him of principles that would be useful in a given situation, and also to check against principles that were misleading or unhelpful. Generally speaking, these were principles of geometry (e.g. right triangles), though there were some algebraic principles as well (e.g. fractions). That said, math tends to be the most content-heavy of the different sections, and also the least responsive to strategy. I expect us to move a little faster through the other subjects.

We started out by having her work through her homework. She remembered how to do almost everything on her own. Then we worked on percentages. The student hasn't learned percentages in school yet, but was a bit familiar with them just from hearing them in everyday life. We talked about the definition of a percent (something out of 100) and then practiced writing a decimal or fraction from a percent and vice versa. She learned that very quickly. Next, we covered how to find the percent of a number, but the student had never seen algebra before so we needed to cover how to write and solve algebraic expressions before she could learn how to apply it to percentages. We began reviewing some basic algebra, but we will focus mostly on that next time. Lastly, we reviewed exponents and what it means to have a negative exponent. The student seemed to understand this well although she had never seen negative exponents before. I gave her some homework problems at the end to practice these concepts. Overall it was a great session!
