"We worked on her paper for Their Eyes Were Watching God. She had already selected 10 of 12 quotes so we went through each one discussing how they related to race, class, and or gender identity and self-worth of Janie, the main character. She had lots of thoughts and just needed to start notes/rough points for each. We also discussed how some overall theses could be made looking at each group together."
"The student and I continued to work on her writing assessment, which she had written previously and sent to me. We read through the passage she was to write about, and worked on her analysis skills by identifying the subject, purpose, audience, etc. To do this, I instructed the student to look for keywords which she could use to identify the needed parts of the passage. The student was very adept at knowing, instinctively, what the passage was about, she just needed help to find the parts of the passage that supported her knowledge. The session ended with the student planning on putting the finishing touches on the 5 passage assessments."
"I met with the students online this morning from 10-11am. They have an English assignment to read, the play "The Bear" by Chekhov, and a review to write. We discussed farce, "I Love Lucy," television sit-coms in general, and many aspects and specific passages in the play that are exaggerated and ridiculous. After brainstorming and identifying passages, I left them to do some free writing. We plan to tentatively meet next Wednesday morning. They will attempt to send me drafts of what they have written"
"The student finished incomplete homework in his reading assignment, writing short answers, and writing definitions. We then corrected the assignments that I left him at our last meeting, which were reading short paragraphs and answering comprehension questions and penmanship practice. I gave him additional reading, reading comprehension, and penmanship assignments. We also worked on taking pride in his finished work."
"The student read through three short stories and he answered questions about the stories. His reading speed was noticeably faster than in previous weeks. He also completed worksheets about when to use am/ are/ is. He did well on those worksheets. He also did well on his vocab. He did a great job on his sight reading flash cards. On the second time through, he got most of them correct. I will add some more to the stack for next time. He had a great attitude throughout the session. His confidence is growing each time we meet."
"The student did so much better with the elapsed time today. She did not even need my help for most of it. She was able to tell me that there 70 minutes = 1:10 and 80 = 1:20 which was a huge improvement from last week. Next week we will do more of this with a mix of reading if she gets it."
