Today was my first session with this student and it went very well. She is just starting to work with both physics and calculus and because of that we spent a lot of time talking about what things like derivatives mean and relating it to physics. We also went through part of her homework and made sure that she understood what was going on. She wanted to finish it on her own and if she had any trouble she would send the problem to me, which is great. It is too early to tell what her problems may be but she has a good strong foundation for the subjects and seems to be genuinely interested in them, so it should work out nicely. Everything we worked on was how to think about the problems. Once she is more experienced we will be able to get to more in depth thoughts about the problems so she will be able to approach problems from multiple angles. I left her with her homework only. In the next few meetings I will start giving her extra homework, once she knows a little more. The session went very well and I think that she will do very well in the class as long as she works hard at it.

Today, the student and I studied Chapter 3 together. We began by going over the PowerPoint slides. He knows his concepts well. We focused on doing problems. First, we did problems on converting among grams, moles, and molecules using Avogadro's number, then we moved on to finding percent mass composition. From there, we went up to finding limiting reagents. Then, we looked over empirical formula and molecular formula, solved problems in stoichiometry, and, in the very end, worked on problems for finding reaction % yield. Overall, he was able to understand how to do the problems after one or two examples, and he can do the problems by himself without any help. After the chapter review, he worked on his homework, and the homework was finished quickly. At the end of our session, I felt that he was ready for his midterm next week.

The student said she has a science test coming up, so we looked over some of that material. We reworked several problems from a worksheet on unit conversions until she was comfortable with that material, then we practiced an anagram for metric units. We also looked over a few recent pages from her math workbook.

We have covered all the exercises that the student was unsure about, which included 4 exercises involving implicit derivation, and three involving derivatives of the implicit functions. The student is gaining confidence and has gained skills needed to do implicit derivations and derivatives of function combinations accurately. The student has good basic skills in manipulating polynomials and other functions which helps a lot in calculus.

First we worked through the physics packet. Topics of the packet were: displacement, distance, velocity, speed, and reading from plots. The student's attitude was great. Next we moved on to the online pre-calculus lesson. The lesson was on complex numbers, standard form, trigonometric form, multiplying and dividing complex numbers, raising complex numbers to a power, and De Moivre's theorem. After the lesson we worked through the first five of the assigned exercises.
