Session Summaries by MCAT Tutors

Garden Grove, CA MCAT tutoring
We discussed electrostatics. We began by briefly reviewing the Gravitational Law of Newton, explaining the derivation of the acceleration due to gravity. We discussed charge and its measurement. We defined current flow. We then examined Coulomb's Law, comparing it the Gravitational Law, and highlighting the key take-away points. We discussed the most common question types in electrostatics. We then discussed the main metaphor of electrostatics to help define electric fields. We discussed their diagrams and when they are uniform. We worked a problem about the field to show how the same problem could be solved with trig or shortcutted with symmetry. I defined dipoles, comparing the dipole moment vector to the chemist's dipole. We discussed inducible dipoles and the upshot of dielectrics as well as how dipoles rotate to align with the external electric field. We discussed how to predict the motion of charged particles through uniform electric fields. We discussed electrostatic potential energy, comparing it to gravitational. We discussed how only the change in PE matters, and defined voltage. We discussed the membrane potential and how it is generated, including how the energy released by allowing sodium to follow its electrochemical gradient can be used to drive nonspontaneous transport processes. We closed with a few problems relating mechanics to voltage. The student needed to review the meaning of a mole. She is still working on breaking her bad habits of neglecting units. On a great note, she truly seems to have understood the patterns of linear motion, and has absorbed our discussions of work, but suffers from the common student mistake of making things more complicated than they need to be. By the end of the session, however, she was solid on knowing how to use voltage to solve energetics problems. The student will review topics in mechanics, and let me know whether we will review SHM or begin with atomic structure on Monday. I have made it clear that she should do a lot of practice problems to make solid the conceptual knowledge she has worked so hard to achieve.

I will be working with the student through prep materials through which I raised my score by 7 points. I am excited to tutor her again on Friday, and help her with all the concepts that are so essential in taking the test. She is enthusiastic and follows well with the explanations.

The student and I went over biology (digestive system), chemistry (acids, bases, buffers, titrations), and physics (E&M, SHM). She was strong in physics and biology and was able to answer most of the questions, and we reviewed some of the passage-based questions that required her to carefully read the passage. She stated her verbal scores have improved significantly, which is great to hear from her. Since we are almost finished with the content books, we will move onto doing questions exclusively within the next 2+ weeks.

The student and I began by working through the troublesome aspects of fluids. We first reviewed all of the vital equations, and then practiced applying them with several discrete and passage-based questions targeting the various aspects of the topic. We then worked a CARS passage on poetry, detailing specific strategies for these types of passages, and general ones applicable to all types of CARS passages she may run into. After this, we spent some time reviewing titrations, an area that she identified as a weakness.

The student and I reviewed her physical sciences passages on her most recent practice exam. This included fluid dynamics problems, kinematics, acidity, thermodynamics, and general physics problems. She is going to work on reviewing physics and physics equations before our next session.

The student and I reviewed how the kidney functions (electrolyte balance, concentrated urine through ADH and aldosterone). We went over each section of the kidney, such as proximal tubule vs descending and ascending loop of Henle, distal tubule vs collecting duct, etc. We also reviewed oxygen and CO2 exchange in the lungs and lung volumes. We also reviewed some questions from the database.
