Garden Grove, CA Mandarin Chinese tutoring
The students are two children who speak several languages. Now they are learning Chinese. My main focus is to make them feel connected and stay engaged while listening and learning to speak as much Chinese as possible. I always say the English first then follow with Chinese so they would know the meaning. Today I taught them how to say 1, 2, 3 and how to say: "thank you" and "good bye." They also learned "give me five."

I worked on a couple of different work books with Student 1. The material is not hard for him, but I used the opportunity to introduce new words (shadow, alligator...) We went onto a story about a duck who likes to play/waste water. The key point of the story is to teach kids not to waste water. He said they don't waste water because they only use a little bit of water. When I tried to get Student 2 to talk about his day, his classes, he initially just keep on telling me that he forgot. I think the hesitation on his side was due to the fact that he didn't know how to say any of those things in Chinese. The attitude changed a bit after I gave him options of classes, i.e. act out music class, math class...etc. He then told me he had PE and told me about the race he had today.

Today we mainly learned how to read numbers in Chinese, both numbers you need to count and you don't have to count. The number system in Chinese is a little complicated; however, the student did a very good job. Next time, we'll have a very quick test of numbers. We also covered the first dialogue in lesson five, the translation and meaning. The student has always been very good at the tones/pronunciation of characters in Mandarin, which is very good.

The student was asked to speak in Chinese and use all the tourist sites I taught last time in describing a recent trip she had. Then, we went over the textbook together. Once we finished the vocabulary in the chapter, we went over it again. As the session finished, I asked her go over these words later.

Today, we finished the student's Spanish homework and went through the material for his World Studies quiz. He did very well today! His understanding of the material for both classes was good, and he picked up new concepts quickly.

I helped the student prepare for her Spanish exam this coming Monday. We reviewed indirect compliments (e.g. "she gave him"), and I assigned her some practice work to help her study. She had some questions about the use of gerunds, so we went over that concept as well. We then reviewed a Spanish paper she wrote on a famous Cuban poet. I went through any grammatical errors with her, and we worked on improving the content.
