Session Summaries by GRE Tutors

Garden Grove, CA GRE tutoring
We continued to discuss Acid-Base. We began by discussing how to assess the strength of acids and bases quantitatively and qualitatively. In so doing, we discussed polyprotic and oxoacids and their deprotonated anions whose charges the MCAT requires students to know. We then discussed the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation: understanding its terms and what it describes, how it is derived, and how to apply it. We ran several problems to show the student how to apply it when necessary. We developed the intuitive approach that allows students to bypass calculations, and applied it to the Isoelectric Point. He was appreciative to see how many of the concepts in Acid/Base tie in to other areas of science. In addition, he needed some help with truly understanding logarithms, but he got it pretty quickly once I explained it. His fear of the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation has been eliminated. We will review buffers and titrations, and let me know if he needs further clarifications. Otherwise, we cover Redox and Electrochemistry.

4/9: We began today's session by reviewing the two practice essays that the student wrote last week. She's an excellent writer, and there were only a few small things that we needed to review (choosing only one side for the "Issue"ù essay, avoiding first-person POV, using different examples for the "Issue"ù essay, and not referring to the prompt for the "Issue"ù essay). Because her writing is so strong, we'll only spend time discussing the essay sections when she's finished a new practice essay. We devoted the rest of the session to math review. We discussed Venn diagram and probability problems in great detail. The concepts are slowly returning, and once she's seen several of the same type of problem, she's able to answer them much more quickly. She was much more comfortable with geometry, so we won't need to devote as much time to these questions as the other concept areas.

We continued with geometry. We began with some direct instruction about coordinate geometry, including finding line formulas, distances, and errors. We then did a variety of other geometry problems, generally involving using elements of one figure to calculate aspects of another.

We covered Math practice on exponent rules and counting principles, primarily from the prep book. We also worked through these sections in the Math review section of the book, clarifying concepts and looking at sample problems. For our extra session tomorrow, we will focus on reading comprehension and sentence completions from the Verbal section, and then next week, we will get back into the Geometry portion of the Math review.
