Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"First we reviewed the dates, the time and other vocab from the previous session. We engaged in conversation, and during the conversation he also learned some new vocab: maybe, we/us, you all, they/them, credit card, because, need, except/unless and eat. At the end, we reviewed his homework and made corrections. Tonight's homework is to translate one full sentence I gave him."
"Today, we first did a quick review of chapter 5. The group had the vocabulary down, which made me really happy. They were able to utilize the sentences we learned then, which involved introducing with "Ze shi" (this is) and then returning a conversation to someone using "ni ne" (how about you). I had the group practice a bit. We practiced with numbers, which they did with very few stumbles. When we had that down, we moved on to chapter 6. We introduced how to say "Where is one going" and "____ is going to someplace". The vocabulary was easy for them to remember, and the roots helped. However, they had a bit of trouble when it comes to pronouncing words such as "ce suo" and "qu" because it was new and special, and there are no sound-alikes in English for them to relate to. We did the sentences next, and had them read some of the passage samples to try to emulate. We had the group go around and ask where one is going and say where they are going - such as being able to say they want to go to the bathroom. Finally, I had them write down a sample self-introduction and gave them a template on how to introduce oneself, and turn the conversation to the other person in very basic sentences. I added a few bonus words to help them describe their occupation, though it was a bit hard for them since they are still beginners. Otherwise, they did really well. They were able to greet someone, say their names, ask the other person their name, introduce their occupation, other people's names, and even say where they go to work."
"This was my first session with this student. I went through the books he used in his school in Singapore and I brought some books. We had different conversations. I had a main idea of what level he is at and his vocabulary level. We decide to use his books and I will supplement with my books/ flashcards in the future as materials for conversations. We practiced vocabulary involving colors, numbers, animals, foods, etc."
