Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We specifically went over the homework for the entire session. There was a lot of material to cover. I noted a lot of improvement in reading comprehension. Math is definitely the student's only major weakness. I did leave her with a decent amount of homework and look forward to our next session."
"We started this evening with some of his math homework, reviewing some of his work from a couple nights ago and going over his homework for tonight. For some we went over two different ways of solving the problem (using a chart, as suggested by the book, and without a chart). Next we worked on some language problems. He struggled a bit with the "spelling error" questions--some because of not knowing how a particular word was spelled and some because he just wasn't catching the mistake (I could tell this because when I read the sentence containing an error to him and had him transcribe what I said he spelled the word in question correctly). I showed him a few pages in his book that have some usage rules and told him to have his mom or dad give him a spelling test of commonly misspelled words so he can work on the ones that he is uncertain on. We ended with some math problems, which went moderately well. The timing aspect continues to be a concern, given the quantity of problems he'll have to solve in a relatively short period of time."
"We did a general review of what the assessment exam covers and how the test is structured and administered. Using her prep book, the student and I went through the first sections of the exam, which are the Verbal Skills section and Language Skills section. We were able to identify her strengths and the more challenging areas by doing a few practice problems in the various categories. She did well overall in synonyms, antonyms, analogies, and verbal sequences. She would like to do additional work in the reading comprehension and word completion sections, and she wants to improve her vocabulary in general. She did well in the logic section. As we move forward, we will continue to work on the reading sections. Next session, we will review the homework and start with the Math and Qualitative sections. We plan to do a practice test mid-way into our sessions just to gauge where she is before her exam in early December. I assigned her homework related to reviewing vocabulary words and asked her to read 2 reading comprehension paragraphs and answer a total of 6 questions."
