Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I played "five chess" in the beginning to warm up. She's getting better and better at it every time. We then practiced writing of some characters including dates and numbers. We also practiced doing more math in Chinese, with bigger numbers; she enjoyed doing it. Finally we drew cartoons on the white board and used Chinese to practice saying names of animals, body parts as well as colors. It was a good lesson!"
"The student has a Spanish test tonight, so we spent our time reviewing. She was given a study guide outlining the material on the test, so we covered everything on her study guide. I gave her practice sentences involving the use of "ar" verbs, the verb gustar, ser vs. estar, etc. She had made flashcards for all of the vocabulary as I suggested. By the end of our session, she seemed to have mastered most of the grammatical concepts. If she spends time studying the vocabulary words before her test, she should do well!"
"Today the student and I continued to read her Fred and Ted book. Every page I would read first in Spanish, then in English, go over important vocabulary, and then she would read the page. Her pronunciation has improved and she is building her Spanish vocabulary. Once we finished Fred y Ted, we moved on to Buenas Noches Luna with the same process."
"We were reviewing the topics from the past week, those were the past tense verbs in subjunctive form. The student did an excellent job; he really didn't struggle, but he needed to practice irregular verbs. First he was giving me oral examples, then I took some flashcards and told him to give me more examples using them. After that we started to practice a new topic. For that I told him about the new conjugation of the verb and I showed him some images. As soon as I showed them to him he had to tell me the right conjugation, so we did this with every person of the singular and then with the ones of the plural. I also was timing him and challenging him to do more every time. He did a great job and he is also very positive!"
"We went over some of the student's listening homework, which involved exercises about the morning routine. He did a good job recording the answers to questions involving what people were doing in the morning! He still needs to work on listening comprehension, but is making progress. I might recommend making flashcards for the reflexive verbs, since that would make a lot of these exercises easier."
"Jessica and I reviewed the use of the verbs 'ser' and 'estar' with which despite years of study, many Spanish students struggle. Afterwards, she and I conversed in Spanish about her life. We reviewed about 30+ new terms and phrases related to coastal environments and species of marine mammals. She and I used the verb tenses future, imperfect, and preterit. She has made huge advances with the use of the imperfect but occasionally struggles with their use. We will continue to work on that."
