Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Fullerton, CA Microbiology tutoring
The student is having a quiz tomorrow and an exam next Tuesday. We discussed the Acid-base reaction, as this is the main topic on her upcoming quiz/exam. The student did well in solving the test-prep problems. She remembered well what we covered last Monday, with a few mistakes in using the formula and calculation errors that were easy to fix. Hopefully, this coming quiz will show the first good result of her progress.

We split our time between math and physics. For the most part, the students seemed pretty adept at using the list of formulas provided by the teacher, although the reasons why the formulas work seems a little more hazy. Therefore, I showed them how different approaches can lead to the same correct answer. In math class, there were a couple of difficulties when dividing polynomial functions. (Remember to insert the missing place values!) I used an analogy to division of integers to show how to correctly interpret the result and demonstrated a simple test to see if one polynomial divides another evenly. Student 1 hadn't seen the technique for simplifying quotients of complex numbers yet, so we went over that.

Most of our sessions are spent reviewing problems the student is assigned in class. We went over several problems during this session. I also recommended the student speak to her teacher to follow up on some specific problems.

We reviewed Chapters 18 and 19 in preparation for the student's test. He says that he really enjoys science and seemed to grasp most of the terminology and concepts. We worked on a couple of areas he needed extra review in (limiting factors and the carbon cycle) and used alternate materials to help further his understanding. I've been challenging him to explain concepts in terms other than the "word for word" definition to ensure that he isn't just memorizing phrases and terms but that he truly understands the concepts and can come up with real examples. He seems to be understanding the material. We continued to discuss tips for studying and organization.

The student and I went over physics problems involving analyzing position-time graphs and velocity-time graphs. We also went over algebra 2 homework problems involving dividing polynomials using polynomial long division and synthetic division. By the end of the session, he was able to solve the problems correctly.

We continued topics related to the endoplasmic reticulum. Specifically, we discussed how proteins are shuttled to specific areas of the cellular membranes depending on their lipid, sugar, or terminal sequence. I sent her some additional resources to help solidify the material by presenting the information in a different context. She will be sending me some summary notes from her textbook readings.
