Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered trigonometric functions and their applications. We went over exercises on how to gather information from data and express it a function. The student did a great job, at understanding the process and concepts. He has enough material to go over until we meet again this week. Great session overall."
"Today was our first session together. We spent the bulk of the session working on functions. We did a series of word problems together and by the end of the session it was clear that the student had a much better grasp of the issue. My plan for our next session is to continue to work through the problems that have been giving her difficulty; she has a packet that she must work through before a big upcoming test."
"Covered exponents and scientific notation. The student made progress on not just regular (positive) exponents, but also negative and fractional ones. I would like to see him improve further in scientific notation especially in the context of conversions - though he showed some skill in that department too. I gave him, as reference material, the list of SI prefixes and their matching scientific notations."
"We worked on a homework covering composite functions, adding/subtracting functions, and multiplying and dividing functions. Her initial confusion was related to identifying the domain of the composite function, but after numerous example, she got the hang of it and began to identify functions where there would be a domain restriction."
"I reviewed with the student problems on Riemann summations with tips on avoiding common errors on a test. Then we reviewed calculating area of a function using limit summations. We worked on a practice problem together. Then we broke down the strategy for this type of problem so the student could easily remember and apply it on tests."
"We covered factoring polynomials. The student was struggling somewhat with polynomials with a leading number. We worked on a couple different strategies. I am going to send him 2 to 3 of the strategies laid out so that he can choose which works best for him. I assigned him some extra problems out of him book and left an extra sheet. We spent the last half hour doing multiple choice practice quizzes. He did very well on them. I need to find out how many problems his test is and how long he has to do it."
