Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked a little bit on the science section, and she seemed to do a lot better on this section after we discussed strategy for it. I had her work on a math section question by question to see what specific areas we need to review. I think that a review of both Algebra and Geometry may be good, so we are going to do that next week."
"Continued perfecting "Look at Me" by Carrie Underwood. Worked on lengthening phrases and holding out the vowels in words. We also talked about expression and where she feels the emotional emphasis on certain phrases. We are working on dynamics and vocal control. It is sounding SO lovely. :-) Finishing up with this song next week and getting into another one."
"The student and I reviewed math today, focusing on some more concepts we had left behind. Her confidence is faltering and affecting her ability to recognize problems she was able to do before. I am talking to her about her confidence issues and reassuring her. I told her to try to talk to herself in a different manner. We will continue to work on this."
"Today we went over the student's homework about analogies and synonyms. She seems to be in a good place with respect to the verbal portion of the test. We then turned our attention to math. In the math section, she needs to write her work down. We are continuing to focus on her showing her work. We focused on fractions: improper fractions, mixed fractions, adding fractions, and multiplying fractions. For homework, she will be working on fraction problems. Her mother will be buying a book so she can take a practice test, and we can get a baseline score."
"Today's session was centered around mixed numbers, improper fractions, and decimals. Much of this material was new for the student but she took the challenge head on! While working through problems, we learned the hard way that a few seconds spent analyzing and planning an attack can save more time in the long run. Even when she did solve the problem the long way, I showed her where time could have been saved but reinforced that both methods yield the same result. I left the student with a review assignment covering geometry; our next topic, ideally. However, the student and I agreed that more practice with decimals is our priority."
"We worked on math test taking strategies and math problem solving. We covered area, perimeter, and story problems. The student's attitude is always pleasant regardless of what material we are covering. I did include strategies for test taking and we reviewed problems that can be worked on at home. The student was given a handout on common root words. I did not see any grades but did discuss standardized test scores with her mom. A big win for this session was that she has gained more confidence in math, even concepts she was unfamiliar with previously."
