"The boys and I went over the basics of the placement test in order for me to get a sense of where they were at with the test and to give them an idea of what the test would be like. Both boys seem to be in similar places in terms of the test. The one student's speed with the problems was solid, and he seemed familiar with the math concepts we went over, employing them easily to solve the given questions. Both boys struggled with the harder math questions, and their speed on the reading section will need some work. I will be able to make a more detailed assessment once both boys have taken the practice test, which I assigned them to do before our meeting next week. For now, it seems clear to me that our primary emphasis will be on the math and science sections of the test, as these are the ones that both boys seemed to have the most difficulty with."
"We focused on the math section today. We finished going over the first math section she did. This took awhile, since we did an in-depth review of each problem she missed so I could see what areas of math she needs the most help with. We focused on topics such as trig, which she understood the basics of but needed a little bit of help to remember how to solve triangles. She also needed help with logs, which she has not yet learned in class. Once we finished going over the test, I had her do some math problems by herself to see if she was able to apply the things we talked about to questions. She got most of them correct, but had a little difficulty with longer word problems, so we talked about how to break those up into more manageable bits to help her solve them one step at time. For next time, in addition to completing the English practice test, I asked her to finish the math worksheet."
"The student and I covered math today. He's in good shape, and just needs techniques, tips, and speed improvement. His skill level is good. We're doing reading next week."
"Today, the student and I went over the practice Math and Science test she did for homework, covering each question she was unsure about. She said she was beginning to feel more confident in both and that her timing was improving. We had some extra time, so we started working through another Science section, going one passage at a time, and we got through 3 passages."
"Today, the student and I worked on ACT Reading and Science. First, we went over the results of a practice ACT Reading test that she'd done. The main areas for improvement are timing and inference questions. I suggested writing down the numbers of the line-reference questions to keep track of which questions to do first. She can also keep track of her timing by knowing that it should take about 3 minutes to read the passage and about 8 minutes to answer the questions for each passage. At our next session, I'd like to focus on the inference questions specifically. We next went over the results of an ACT Science test that she'd done. With the science section, I think simply more practice will help familiarize her with the style of questions and help her quickly decode the graphs."
"Today, the student and I worked on the Math and Science sections of the ACT in our first session. We essentially split the session into two halves: one for Math and the other for Science. He was a bit rusty with his math skills since he hasn't taken math since last year's fall semester, and he is not taking a math class this semester. I was able to help him if he was stuck or didn't remember how to solve a problem. The Science section went more smoothly for him, and he did not have much trouble with any of the questions. It seems that we will focus more on Math in our future sessions."
