"During today's session, the student and I continued to explore quadratic equation applications (word problems). We worked together to solve the seven application problems that I shared with her last week via email. The problems were focused on a projectile question, a tossing a ball question and several questions involving area of a rectangle or triangle. She grasped the concepts quite well and asked appropriate questions for clarification. We were able to finish six questions completely. She is to email me her response to the final question. We will begin working on solving systems of equations during our next session."
"He had a section from his online class that he had skipped over so we went back to work on that. It was dividing polynomials and showed both long division and factoring. He understood the long division process more readily than factoring. I explained that factoring would be preferable as he moved along in algebra, but to go ahead with long division for now. He worked through the practice problems while I was with him and planned to try to finish the lesson on his own."
"He had an upcoming quiz on all the introductory material from Chapter 2 from his text book. This included conjectures of parallel lines with a line through them, different properties of supplementary/adjacent angles, as well as multiplicative and additive properties. He seemed very comfortable with the difficulty of the material, so we spent more time going over practice problems."
"He had several questions for me right when we got started. He had a quiz in math today and didn't feel very confident. I was able to walk him through what he remembered for his questions and after some practice he was seeming a little better with the concepts. We will continue practicing all of these concepts in the upcoming sessions. He also needed some help putting together a Microsoft Word project for his computer class. We spent the last part of our session working through and finding the different tools he needs to implement into his document."
"He had the first half of his test today and he seemed to be confident he did well. After discussing, we found a few errors in his calculations, but I still feel he can pass. For this session, we covered how to dissect a word problem and translate it into a math problem. I showed him what key phrases and markers to look for so he can tackle the second half of the test with more confidence. I feel like he has progressed in his understanding of the subject material, but has some work to do in his organization and preparedness for the tests and homework."
"He had to graphically and algebraically solve several equations that were written only in terms of x. To solve graphically, each side of the = was treated as a separate function. If the two functions crossed, that value of x was the solution. If two parallel lines were created, the equations had no solutions. He also had to evaluate a few functions based on real life scenarios, find the solution, and state what it meant in real world terms."
