Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first meeting so we reviewed the student's practice test that he completed last week. He did fairly well. We will start focusing on skills and timing next session."
"The student and I had a great session today!!! We started our session by completing the question of the day on the tutoring website in the Reading section. We then went over Reading Comprehension exercises in the test prep book. We discussed the different types of questions pertaining to comprehension, and paragraph structure. Next, we covered Verbal Reasoning skills in the book. We discussed how certain words go together in groups, and recognizing word patterns. Then, we went over critical comprehension flashcards. We worked predominately on summarizing, and then answered the question about the text. We went over how to summarize, and what to look for. I demonstrated how to summarize, and then he practiced. After we summarized we answered the questions about the text. He got over 90% of the questions correct, and answered them much faster than before. We ended our discussion by going over summarizing, and I asked him if he would practice summarizing with his homework tonight-Social Studies reading. Great job!"
"In today's session we continued working through practice/diagnostic problems as a follow up on last session's work. We went over a handful of math problems I'd given him to finish up. From there, we moved on to discussing the language portion of the test. We worked through an entire language section over the course of the session and I taught him all the grammar rules he needed to know to answer each question correctly. For his homework I assigned him two sections of a new test: the mathematics (concepts & problem solving) and the language. I told him to time both as if he were in test conditions, as I personally believe he's nearly there to be able to complete all the problems within time. I do think he will run over the allotted time (I told him to finish anyway even if time ran out) but it will be good practice for the real thing, and I would like to see just how far he gets within the time limit at his current capabilities."
"We went over a number of problems within the book. The student was able to get most critical reading questions correct. I think that if we review the higher level difficulty questions, he will be well prepared for the math section in October. For the reading section, I believe that he needs to read the questions a little more carefully and use specific strategies to answer the questions. We will continue to work on this."
"We went over a physics review for her final, we did kinematics equations, with velocity components in the x and y directions, and force due to gravity acting to create acceleration in one dimension (the y-component). We then used the kinematics equations to solve for displacement and time in 2 dimensions. We then discussed momentum and elastic vs. inelastic collisions, and how elastic collisions have momentum and kinetic energy conserved (kinetic and the motion of the 2 particles remains separate), and how inelastic collisions involve the 2 particles sticking together and continuing their motion as a single combined mass. We also reviewed how in inelastic collisions only momentum is conserved, not also energy. We discussed her SAT scores and her classes for next year. I hope to continue working with her, she is a pleasure to teach."
"We went over a practice CLEP test. It covered the subjunctive, adverbial expressions, and past and present tense. The student was determined in learn the concepts. I referred him to several websites that condensed the necessary information that he needed to know. I left him with some practice exercises on the previously mentioned websites. I have faith that he will do well on his upcoming exams."
