Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During today's session, the student and I worked on factoring. We did a couple of problems together so he could understand the process. After working on some examples, he did some problems on his own. Once he understood what he was to do, he was able to do them on his own. The student wasn't able to complete many problems, but we will continue to work on this during our next session."
"First this session, we covered perimeter, area, and volume of two and three-dimensional objects. In the next session, we looked into word problems and algebraic equations. I also checked on the student's reading comprehension. He seems to be doing very well."
"The student and I worked on the ACT Science section and practice SAT that she had done for homework. We reviewed tips for the science section, including reading only the graphs/diagrams on the first review through the passage. We got through the SAT Reading and Verbal sections and through half of the Non-Calculator section. At our next meeting, I would like to finish up the SAT Math and then look at the new practice SAT that I gave her at our last session."
"Today, the student and I focused on math. She had some exponent problems she wanted to work. I also added some percentage problems. What I focused on most was getting her to identify components of the problem and choose solving strategies. I emphasized to her that she was providing all the right information; she just needed to identify a strategy that used what she knew. I helped her plan out her last few days of prep work, which will largely be based around practice questions. She will take another practice test. She is going to make sure her cheat sheet is completely memorized. I told her what she needed to focus on most is practicing choosing solving strategies and interpreting questions. If she confidently selects formulas and keeps straight what she is doing conceptually, she will do well."
"We did an hour of reading and an hour of math. The questions we worked on today were somewhat easier than what we had started with, although they came from an actual SAT practice test. Overall, the student is scoring in the 80% range on reading and the 65% range on math. I told her that the accuracy she is working with currently will almost assuredly score her higher on this attempt. I reminded her to look into getting a good book for comprehension and vocab, although it seems like in general she is staying pretty busy with school and extracurriculars. She seems eager to succeed and she is easy to work with."
"We reviewed for a test on Thursday. The student had a review sheet with topics and problems that will appear on the test. Topics included definition, postulates, theorems on lines, segments, angles, planes, etc. We also covered proofs and word problems requiring construction of and solution of problems."
