Session Summaries by French Tutors

French Tutoring review by Melissa in Bartlett, TN
We reviewed the student's homework for today. I'm hearing some slight improvements in pronunciation, and she's self-correcting on a few things. That's good to hear. Her context clue skills continue to impress, but she still has a hard time with verbs. She understands the questions being asked in French, but she can't always formulate the best response on her own. We spent about ten minutes coming up with a study plan for the next few weeks before her final. We'll be hitting verbs really hard and spending a little bit of time going over her history, adverbs and adjectives, and question words. It's going to be a pretty relentless schedule with lots of extra material for her to study on her own. I hope she's ready! She did let me know she currently has an A in the class.

French Tutoring review by Kris in Bartlett, TN
Today we worked on some speaking exercises to get the student prepared for the oral portion of his final exam. These consisted either of topic prompts which he had to speak on for a few minutes, or dialogues discussing a particular topic. The topics were drawn from those he's worked on over the course of the semester. For homework, I asked him to write out his responses to the prompts so that we could correct the grammar in them and use them in the future as practice sentences while speaking. Also for homework I gave him a worksheet on French pronouns.

The student is doing well with conjugation and review of past concepts that we're confusing or difficult. She flew through them easily today. Next session we will work on contextualizing subjonctif, futur simple and conditional with more fill in the blank and dialogue based exercises.

French Tutoring review by Dawson in Bartlett, TN
We covered adverbs and pronouns , which seemed to be giving the student the most difficulty. After explaining the grammatical concepts, we practiced with examples and answered any further questions (35 minutes total). Next we went over her practice exercises within the textbook and agreed that rewriting the examples will cement her understanding of the adverbs and pronouns. She appeared to be very confident that the reviewed materials were clear and understood. She also expressed that her oral comprehension was one of her weak points. I suggested multiple songs in French, as well as watching newscasts, shows, and movies to get used to the speed of the language. Hopefully she does well on her exam tomorrow and if there are any further questions or concerns with any of her lessons, feel free to contact me.

French Tutoring review by Hannah in Bartlett, TN
Today, the student and I worked primarily on futur simple. She did very well with conjugating, which was our main focus. As we went over definitions of the verbs we were conjugating, we linked them back to our last lesson, when I had encouraged her to draw a house with "etre" past-tense verbs. It was very creative and elaborate - almost better than the book drawing - and she was able to think back to it to recall definitions of displacement verbs. We also delved a bit into multiple-verb structure. At the end, I reminded her to continue practicing and reviewing every day to stay strong in the material. I'm excited to see what she has accomplished by next week!

French Tutoring review by Hannah in Bartlett, TN
Today, the student did a lot of reading assignments. We read more about art and architecture in Paris and the way that people responded to the modern style of architecture. Then we read about Victor Hugo, as an introduction to a reading from Notre Dame. She and I also did a lot of work on the comparative and the superlative forms of adjectives. Overall, it was a very useful and productive session. She received great grades on all of the assignments that we worked on.
