Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student just got back her results from a proctored practice test, so she and I went over the questions she got wrong on topics that include geometry, functions, and pattern recognition."
"We discussed concepts in SAT math including strategies, geometry, fractions, polynomials, probability, series, and various other concepts. We applied these concepts to practice SAT questions."
"We began by reviewing the sentence completion homework I had assigned during our last meeting. Once again, he did very well in completing the assignment. We then transitioned into issues that are specific to working through the sections under timed, test-taking conditions. Specifically, we discussed the obstacles that come into play with the urgency of a time limit, and how the time limit affects the strategy you use when working through questions. I then gave him a complete, three section Critical Reading practice exam. I timed him, and attempted to the best of my ability to recreate a test taking circumstance. I feel this will serve two purposes: one, it will be a strong indicator of where the student is in his progression with the material, and two, it will give me a clearer picture of what to focus on during our remaining hours together. Also, in a break between test sections, I introduced him to an exercise in critical reading skills. I reminded him of the three types of passages that could be used in the critical reading SAT, and I asked him to find a real world example of each for homework. It could be from a variety of source materials, such as a newspaper, magazine, blog, or novel. I then asked him to write three to five questions, complete with multiple choice answers, with the hope that engaging in the process of building these questions will strengthen his understanding of what to look for in passages to answer these questions successfully."
