"First we did the review of the 4 tones, and she was much better at the end. We then reviewed the "visual logic" of Chinese characters, making sure she understood the idea. Today's lesson was numbers 1-6, how to say and write them, we played around with them to reinforce her memory, also I have introduced Pinyin to her, how it works and the first 6 letters of Pinyin sound. The homework is to finish the worksheet and to practice using the numbers."
"For the first session, the student listened and responded with simple sentences to simple questions conducted in Chinese. He needed help occasionally and with some encouragement, he would ask me to repeat. He recognized many of the flashcard characters. He read simple sentences and even helped unscramble a sentence to read it out correctly. It appears to be the case that because he is immersed in the language as a native speaker would be, he reads out loud the characters more naturally without any aid than he does when I asked him to read out Pinyin. His vocabulary is growing fast and will continue to grow through more communication and reading. This is apparent when he was introduced to new vocabulary from the short song and video he watched. There were some new words, but he still had enough vocabulary to talk about the video in the best way he could and then he repeated and used the new vocabulary. This is excellent! He is highly encouraged to use what words he knows to describe what he sees or hears and it will become more natural and closer to the full meaning as his vocabulary grows. He is encouraged to watch short Chinese video clips and talk about them with the teacher and with me. I will send recommendations."
"We talk about the Chinese holiday for today's class. We went through the holiday names first and then I asked him to pick the one he is interested in so I could explain the holiday for him. He took it well and liked it, and he also can help me to explain it better. I asked him to review the names so he can remember them."
