Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session I began by discussing the high school admissions test with the student and her mother. We talked about the structure of the test, timing, as well as how admission to specialized schools is decided. I had the student complete portions of a practice test in order to assess her test-taking abilities. She did fairly well considering this was her first experience with such an exam. My initial assessments indicate that she will benefit from support in problem solving strategies, including the use of model/representation and a deepened conceptual understanding. The student did well on mathematical calculations that were straightforward process questions. The student's reading fluency and decoding is excellent, and she was able to answer main idea and detail questions accurately."
"Since our last session, the student completed another ACT math section. We reviewed each of the questions she got incorrect, and then we began the third math practice section in her review book. Today reinforced that the student is fully capable of answering all the questions, and we just need to work on speed. There are a couple topics to review, such as finding the area of trapezoids and parallelograms, and series. Prior to our next meeting, I requested that the student finish the math section we began."
"During this session, the student and I worked on the science portion of the college entrance exam. We discussed the strategies to use when reading the passage and how to time them, along with some specific strategies for answering certain types of questions. He is able to go through the passages at a good time, and we will work on how to find the right answer when he needs to reference multiple graphs/charts for one question. We worked on how to mark the graphs and diagrams to help him stay focused."
