Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered potential essay questions for his exam tomorrow. We explored major themes, important incidents, and different rhetorical devices. The student came very prepared and we had a great session."
"The student worked on a reading guide for the Odyssey, and we worked on writing topic sentences. For his reading guide, he had to identify the different characters and their significance in the epic poem. It would be beneficial to him to have a hard copy of the book to work with. While writing topic sentences, we first focused on what the paragraph would be about, jotted down ideas, and then created an outline. After he had a good idea about what he wanted to write, it made it easier to create a strong topic sentence that expressed both the topic for his writing and the opinion that he wanted to convey. After writing a strong topic sentence, the student found that it was easier to write a cohesive paragraph, where each sentence connects with the topic. After writing, we proofread his work for clarity, punctuation, and sentence structure."
"We worked on expository essay writing. Our main focus was on organizing our thoughts, applying supporting evidence to support our claims and using more descriptive words while writing. The student applied the techniques suggested. I encouraged him to use a thesaurus or dictionary to aid in phrasing things in a different way. I did not leave him with extra practice at the end of this session since he did so well composing his essay. Moving forward we will work on increasing his vocabulary and incorporating that vocabulary into his writing. We will work on establishing creative hooks to draw our readers in. Vocabulary practice will be important moving forward. I was able to see growth from our session from Wednesday. He applied the techniques and was more mindful when developing his sentences, claims, evidence, and conclusion."
"The student and I continued our work on phonics, specifically word blends. These seem to be giving her trouble, so we will continue work on this. I will try to gradually incorporate work on vowels so as not to confuse her too much. I have a fun phonics game to bring with me Sunday that I know she will like. As always, she is a great student who is eager to learn."
"The student and I continued to practice questioning, especially when to use the auxiliary verbs "do" and "be." In addition, the student practiced incorporating phrasal verbs into her questions. She continued to expand her vocabulary through notes and will continue studying the questions note sheet I provided her. I will be assigning her an article to read and use as a conversation piece. I will also be assigning her some exercises to practice the simple and progressive past tense."
"The student and I continued to review level E books. He is able to read many of the words in these books. We continued to practice using the chunky monkey to help him follow through with the words and not just guess what the word is after seeing the first letter. It seems to be helping him."
