Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Focused mostly on the student's math today. She is doing well with the concepts, but needs a little encouragement in terms of confidence. Spanish still needs a little work we were able to fit in some verb review today."
"The student and I worked on both geometry and physics today. He seems to have a good understanding on the electrostatics unit in physics.
In geometry, they are now learning about logic. He seems to have a good general understanding on the material, but has to take the time to write out every step rather than skipping steps to get to the conclusion. In addition, we worked on defining the contra positive and clarifying its use. Key points are to go through the homework completely and to include all steps when answering the questions."

"We worked on rearranging and simplifying trigonometric functions. We only worked a few problems, but we practiced a few basic techniques on how to conquer such problems. The student will do great on his test on Friday!"
"We talked about the classes she was in and completed both of her homework assignments. The assignments involved multiplication by decimals and reading information from a table. She is very good at both and very organized in general. We finished off the session by reading a book and we had a short discussion of the topics and vocabulary encountered in the text."
"Today we went over some strategies to keep focused through the long test. Then we went over his 4th math practice test where he did very well and scored a 24 (up from last time's 15). He needs to memorize his circle formulas (circumference, area, volume of a cylinder, and equation on an xy graph)."
"Today was out first lesson. We began by discussing the content and format of the test. The student wanted to start with the math section, which she feels is her weakest. We spent today going over the math diagnostic problem by problem. We identified 3 4 key areas for review. Building these skills (area, volume, ratios, and angle relationships) will help her make quick, smart decisions about how to tackle the math section which problems to skip, attempt, or guess at. Next session we will move onto the writing section, then return to math at a later date."
"We discussed and rated the essay that she had written and went over the rubrics for SAT essays. We worked on the vocabulary worksheets that I had given her last session and completed the pages not finished."
"The student and I had our first meeting of the new semester today. They just started on graphing quadratic equations, so we worked on solving them using the axis of symmetry, the vertex, and the x and y intercepts from both standard and vertex form. We also practiced putting an equation into vertex form from standard form using completing the square technique."
"Tonight I had the student do practice ACT English and science sections with his time limit. He completed the English test with time to spare and scored a 28, 8 points better than his previous practice; we were both elated at this. On the science, he actually ran out of time just after answering the last question; however, he improved his score to 27, an increase of 3 points from before."
"During this session, the student and I reviewed reactions. We paid more attention to redox reactions. We also began reviewing Electrochemistry by examining the components of a galvanic cell and how they work."
"Today we went over a practice test that she had done. She did much better on the science. Most of her reading mistakes were silly little mistakes where she didn't read the question thoroughly. However, her confidence has improved on the science section as well which I think is helping her a lot."
"We went over the fulllength test that the student did, particularly the physical sciences and biological sciences sections. She felt that she underperformed on the latter section, making a few uncharacteristic mistakes. However, upon going over the questions, we realized that she needs to review some physiological concepts. She did fairly well on the organic chemistry questions, which is an improvement from preview tests. She was mostly happy with her physical sciences performance. We talked through all the questions that she got wrong, and I urged her to pay more attention to relationships between variables in equations. We also discussed timing strategies and how to read science passages efficiently."
