Today, we worked through the proportions, ratios, indirect/indirect variation, distance, and work section in the student's workbook. He did a great job using the "table method" for solving ratio questions, and he remembered how to use it from our last session. After practicing, he also was great at solving distance and work problems. Before our next session, he will take a practice exam that I gave him. In our next session, we will review that practice exam, and we will pick back up on page 115 of his workbook.

The student and I went over a practice session of quantitative comparison questions where we started by having her attempt to identify the WAY that the question should be approached, rather than just trying to get her to answer the question. We were focusing on trying to find the "quick" way of getting the question based on the clues that the exam question is giving to answer the question efficiently. We are gradually shifting our focus from "tackling" problems to integrating those skills to improve the amount of time that it takes to do a particular question.

Today, the student and I worked through GRE style math practice problems that revolved around Fractions/Decimals, Percentages, and Ratios/Rates/Proportions. We focused on the essential tips and tricks for each question that should be used in order to solve the problem most efficiently, and I talked through the reasoning and initial setup for many practice problems. She will continue to work on more practice on her own and plans on coming to our next session with targeted questions about those problems that caused her the most difficulty.
