Session Summaries by Computer Science Tutors

Framingham, MA Computer Science tutoring
The student worked on the test prep activity once again. He did not come close to his record in this activity. We spent most of the session discussing quick ways of doing double digit multiplication (adding with easy multiples of 5 and 10) and identifying square numbers. We also discussed inverse operations (squares and square roots). The next session will build on this and we will discuss quick ways of doing double digit multiplication with subtraction. The next session is on Sunday at 4pm.

The student and I spent the session focused on his math homework finding the areas of parallelograms and trapezoids. He perfectly recalled how to find those areas given the proper measurements, and he was also able to break down more complex polygons into parallelograms and trapezoids to find their areas. Next time we will focus on problems asking him to provide a measurement, whether by reversing the area formulae or deducing the missing information from other given measurements.

This session was a continuance of SAT test prep for the student.  Topics covered included: *  Brief free reading session of a vocabulary-intense medical story and follow-up discussion (12 minutes). *  Brief Algebra review with word problems (6 minutes).   *  Grammar, punctuation, and reading comprehension study session and worksheet practice (35 minutes). *  Vocabulary review and new vocabulary introduction with sentence completion exercises (65 minutes).  Review focused on repetition and context. *  Discussion of out-of-session study strategy and practice tests. The student will take a practice test for review on Wednesday, the 7th of August. He did exceptionally well on this session's punctuation review and has retained the majority of vocabulary words covered in the short term so far.  He has been given sentences with context for each word covered and has been encouraged to develop study cards for words that do not have easily determined roots.

Today was the first session with the student. We worked on a review of concepts surrounding linear equations and graphs. She knew some of the material, but not confidently. We worked question by question, and I took the time to elaborate on what each concept meant. I often asked her what she knew about the various concepts of slopes, equations of lines, and x and y intercepts. She had some understanding, but will need to study until she is comfortable with the concepts. With certain concepts, such as x and y intercepts, and parent linear functions, I asked her to write down what I said so she would have notes later. I plan on making this a regular occurrence in our sessions. I want her to have good notes and clear example problems, so she can study on her own effectively.

Today the student and I reviewed for his test tomorrow, by writing 2 different implementations for sorting arrays, discussing how they work, and by going quickly over a previous assignment that he and I worked on using 2D arrays to check for understanding. Good luck on the test tomorrow.
