Session Summaries by MCAT Tutors

Fox Lake, IL MCAT tutoring
[COVERED]: The student wanted to discuss SHM, Waves, and Harmonics. We began with a quick review of Periodic Motion and SHM as a special case. We compared the two main categories of SHM oscillators, discussing them in Force, Displacement, Energy and Work terms. I mentioned to him the unit-circle derivation of angular frequency, showing how uniform circular motion is just SHM in two dimensions. I showed him how SHM is an example of a stable equilibrium, and can be used to model chemical bonds. We discussed Lasers as an example of an unstable equilibrium, and to discuss how the physical characteristics of light waves are perceived. [EXTRA PRACTICE]: He will do a practice exam a day, and will get back to me with more specific topics.

Fox Lake, IL MCAT tutoring
We began by going over the 20 or so problems she had worked in the organic chemistry workbook, up through functional groups and into naming conventions for organic molecules. We covered numbering longest chains, proper notation for functional groups and the hierarchy of naming based on superiority of functional groups, as well as subordinate group naming conventions as well. We reviewed Lewis dot structures, and the difference between functional groups and functionalities. The student had done less of the physics work, so we worked on a couple of simple Newtonian motion calculations, and a small review of vectors. We also reviewed the first few problems in one of her practice MCAT tests, noting that the physics drew from wildly different segments of her review book in adjacent problems. We planned then to accelerate her progress through her physics review book at the cost of deep coverage, opting to get a thorough sampling of concepts down, take a practice MCAT, and assess her progress from there. For our next meeting, she said she would work on continuing the nomenclature work in her organic problem set and work through the first two chapters of her physics review book and problem set.
