Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In preparation for the student's upcoming take-home calculus exam, we worked through practice problems related to the following concepts: critical numbers, first and second derivatives, graphing functions and their derivatives, local maxima and minima, curvature, inflection points, and determining where a function is increasing or decreasing. He was initially unsure about how to approach some of these problems, but after working through a few examples, he was able to approach each problem type independently, which was great!"
"In this session, we did general review for the student's midterm the next day. As such, we went over all the topics that the student had gone through up until this point (excluding matrices, as it was not on the exam). We mainly reviewed the chain rule and word problems, as the student has historically struggled the most with these kinds of problems. We also went over graph sketching problems, as it combined multiple topics that we had gone over, including minima/maxima, derivatives, and second derivative rules. I left the student with extra practice to do at home before his exam the next day, in hopes that he would have the maximum amount of preparation before the midterm."
"In this tutoring session, we discussed 4 problems. Two of these problems were from Chapter 12. They focused on using the parallel axis theorem. For each problem, there were two ways to solve it. We took the calculus-based route. We then moved into Chapter 13. These problems both used an approximation that we were asked to derive as part of the first problem."
"In today's session, the student and I continued to review topics to prepare him for the course he is taking next semester. We started with some algebra properties, as I noticed he was having some trouble with them last session. We worked on simplifying complex fractions, and fraction algebra topics. We also discussed exponent algebra in preparation to discuss logarithms next session. He needed help recalling a lot of these ideas, but was able to utilize them after seeing a few worked out examples. We plan on going over logarithms and trigonometry next session, since these are some of the hardest topics he will see in the class. Overall, we covered a lot of the groundwork material to help him be ready for the class, and we will start to delve into the heavier topics next session."
"In today's session, the student and I reviewed a significant portion of his first exam. We worked through the exam problems themselves, as well as similar supplemental problems. His primary struggle seems to come from a tendency to rush through the process of setting up problems, causing him to approach some problems incorrectly. Much of today's session was dedicated to helping him correct his approach. Additionally, he was given a printout that describes how to use the formal definition of a limit, as well as one that summarizes basic derivatives. The plan for the next session is to finish discussing the exam and to begin diving further into individual topics. Overall, he did a great job today!"
"Last session, we focused purely on chapter seven review and how to take an integral. At the end of the session, I was (and am) confident she understands the material, but she should pay close attention during class when they go over integrals."
