Fountain Valley, CA SAT Writing and Language tutoring
We went over the practice SAT test. The student's score was significantly higher, but at the second test it is too early to attribute this to improved proficiency. Her writing essay had a strong opening paragraph and strong examples, but tended to stray from answering the essay question directly. More emphasis should be placed on connecting points back to the thesis. She had a strong performance on the vocab section of reading. Issues arose in the passage sections with paying careful attention to every word in the question, and considering the author's overall perspective when analyzing a specific portion of the passage. The writing section was particularly strong. For math, I advised skipping a question after a certain amount of time unless one is right at the solution, since there seemed to be some trouble with completing the math sections on time/feeling rushed.

The student and I worked on math problems today. We started with two from the homework that he missed: a distance word problem and a probability problem. We reviewed the concepts and then did some extra practice on those skills. The student felt a lot more confident after the focused review. We continued with math practice by focusing on geometry. We covered area, circumference, triangles, slope, equations of lines, circles, squares, area increase, volume, Pythagorean formula, and special right triangles. The student did very well with the geometry review. His homework is to complete two timed reading sections, two math sections, and two to ten even on the distance worksheet I sent him. We'll meet again Monday and focus on reading. Good session!

We also started working on "improving sentences." The student has been assigned vocabulary words this week and math problems/review.

Today was my first session with this student. She and her parents had a number of questions about the structure and format of the SAT and the old SAT versus the new, so I spent the first period giving them information on what to expect from these tests. The student's main concern right now is math, so we spent the rest of the time discussing the difference between school math and standardized test math approaches, and then I started working with her on some practice problems from recent SAT tests. She seems to have good math skills but was very unsure how to apply them to the test itself, so we will be focusing on strategies and tactics for finding the right answer quickly and accurately.
