Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During our session today, we worked on learning new SAT vocab words and revising an article response essay she had assigned for school. I worked with the student on reinforcing the idea of writing sentences that uniquely help hint at the definition of the word for the new vocab words. For the essay (which she had already written before our session), we worked on matching verb tenses, improving the precision of the language and the writing, and various other proofreading approaches. I also worked with her on writing essays (particularly essays in which she has to express a position or opinion) by saying what she wants to write in order for the writing to be more precise and persuasive. She said she wasn't sure how to approach annotating the SAT reading essay I assigned her last weekend, so I will send her documents on approaches to annotating passages. I will also assign her some language arts and writing homework for her to work on before our next session."
"During this session, I worked with him to get his notecard prepared for his test and we reviewed the concepts that he was having the most trouble with. Word problems and polynomial division were of the most concern. He was doing well with the concepts in the division, but he just needed some more practice with different variations. We went in detail through several problems, and he improved in his speed and accuracy each time. The word problems were still giving him some trouble, but this will be something we will continue to work on throughout the semester."
"During this session, the student and I did practice problems on multiple topics, including both Algebra and Geometry. We looked at common problems and at strategies to approach these problems. For example, if you need to compare two quantities that have variables in them, I suggested that she should consider substituting the variable with a whole number, a fraction, a negative number or zero. We also worked on percent problems such as when an amount is decreased by a certain percent and then increased by the same percent and saw that the final amount is different from the original. We also did problems with consecutive discounts (like 20% off and another 20% off) and noticed that it's not the same as a one-time 40% off discount."
"During this session, the student and I worked on 2 days of homework including inequalities and absolute value. Absolute values were new for her, but she picked up on the concept very quickly. We then reviewed for her quiz, focusing on how to write algebraic expressions from a word problem."
"During this session, the student and I worked several practice problems in preparation for the PSAT. She was able to work many of the problems on her own. Some of the problems that were higher level math were worked by me and explained to her, step by step. She did really well at grasping the new concepts. The concepts that we addressed were factoring, operations with radicals, operations with rational expression, difference of squares and cubes, and solving quadratic and rational equations. I began an introduction to binomial expansion. We will continue with that topic during our next session."
"During this session, we reviewed information that the student was struggling with for his upcoming quarter test. This information included finding the domain of root functions, solving proportions with expressions, completing the square, simplifying roots, solving quadratics, etc. After reviewing the concepts, I feel that he had learned some simple strategies to work with these concepts such as putting expressions into parenthesis before cross multiplying."
