Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed the student's Reading Comprehension home work, and he did quite well on it overall. We then worked on some geometry worksheets. I had him take notes on basic geometry formulas and principles, so he can go over them and commit them to memory."
"Great first session with the student. We covered the vocabulary and analogy portions of the test. We went over the vocab words in a sample section. She raised her number of correct answers on the synonym problems from 13/30 to 27/30!"
"We covered section one, math, from practice test one from the test guide. She missed some of the problems. We also then went on to cover critical reading from section 2 of test one in the official guide. She rarely missed a problem. She is to access the test web site to find additional learning tools and integrate them into her preparation. She has already been at work on the flash cards from the site. She may take a diagnostic or work on whatever problems she would like over the holiday. No concerns."
"The student is really a joy to work with. She is eager to learn and she works very hard. We worked on vocabulary and synonyms with a few analogies problems. She had no trouble with the analogies which I think is very encouraging. For math we reviewed numerical properties and the language of word problems and then I had her work a number of basic order of operations problems. She got most of the answers correct, but once again, the few she missed were due to mistakes in computation that she didn't see until she was almost finished. For homework I asked her to write out and start memorizing the multiples of 13, 15, and 25 to prep for next week's math review."
"Great session. There was improvement on the Reading Comp section from 30% to 40%. She's doing better using the process of elimination and identifying key trigger phrases ("according to the passage," "main idea," author agreement, tone, etc.). Homework is a 30 minute timed Math section on word problems, to bridge the gap from Reading to Math."
"Reviewed properties of exponents and irrational numbers. Worked on calculating slope and finding X- and y- intercept.Completed 8th grade challenge analogies. Reviewed reading comp strategies. Completed reading and questions of SSAT reading comp practice test part 1 and reading of part 2. Began discussion of SciFi novel "Frozen." The student will describe the main character/narrator with 5 adjectives and write up to 5 sentences about the novel's main problem prior to our next meeting. He will also complete at least 1 diagnostic prior to our next meeting."
