Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We mostly covered refraction and optics. We reviewed the foundational concepts of refraction then moved on to Snell's law and total internal reflection. We moved on to the specifics of optics, using the framework of the focal length equation and the four principal optics, deprioritizing ray diagrams. We started with divergent systems, which are simpler. We then moved on to convergent systems, focusing on the difference between o and f. We then examined how the relationship between o and 2f affected magnification, tying it all back to the example optics. We ran an example problem with complex optics. The student had absorbed our discussion of refraction from the last time. She had a little difficulty understanding when various quantities were negative, so we reviewed by constructing a table for them. We will discuss the Renal system the next time."
"We went over practice problems that the student missed, as well as general physics themes and trends to look out for."
"Today we continued our logical reasoning practice. I'm really impressed with how far the student has progressed. He only missed 5 out of the 20 questions that we did, and for a student who first saw the test 4 days ago, that is a dramatic increase in accuracy. Moving forward, I'm encouraging him to think in a more abstract fashion so that he can pull the relevant details from a question and discard the extraneous information."
"The student and I began by working through a number of logic games problems. She did fairly well on the first two games in being able to come up with a sketch and answer some of the problems. I helped her with some of the more difficult problems. She struggled more with the last two problems and I walked her through those two games in more detail. At the end of our session, we worked through half of a logical reasoning section. She did fairly well on her accuracy and her pacing is close to where it needs to be on this section. I encouraged her to practice more problems on her own ahead of our next meeting."
"The student and I finished our discussion of his practice test. His accuracy was fairly good and his understanding of the rules very good. We spent the last portion of today's session working on using LR questions to help us identify what we needed to look for in the stimuli and the questions both, noting consistent patterns and variations."
"The student and I first worked on abstract role questions. He is good at identifying the role but needs improvement on the abstract language that appears in the answer choices. He is also improving on finding good and bad arguments. We finished the session by working on a logic game. His setup strategy is not bad, but we will need to work on finding the deductions in the beginning of the game."
