We spent the majority of the class time introducing the verbs "ser" and "estar," including their conjugations, usage, and definitions. We also discussed how to identify the gender of nouns by looking at the general word ending types while learning the exceptions to a few of the common rules. We will meet as a class tomorrow evening and will start to learn the conjugation of a few regular and irregular verbs.

The student and I went over Cramer's rule today. To perform the computations of Cramer's rule, I had to explain to him how to find a determinant. This involved defining matrix minors and minor cofactors. I showed him a more compact way to write Cramer's rule down, which will make it easier to remember. I also explained the practicality of Cramer's rule: it's really not good for solving an entire system. But Cramer's rule is really useful if we only need to solve for one of the variables in a system.

I helped three students with geometry. We specifically covered proofs. There was little understanding of the concept, so we started at the very beginning on identifying congruent angles and worked our way up. By the end of the session, one of the students seemed as if she gained a better understanding and another seemed as if she already knew how to do the work.

The student and I began working on the preterite tense today. We first reviewed the regular ar, er, and ir verbs, noting that er and ir verbs are conjugating in the same way. We then looked at some irregular verbs in the preterite such as: tener, poder, poner, saber, and estar. We also looked at some stem-changing preterite verbs such as dormir and pedir, where the irregularity only occurs in the third person singular and third person plural forms. We spent a fair amount of time working on reading comprehension by doing a fill in the blank exercise in his text. The blanks all required the use of an irregular preterite verb. Some of the verbs were difficult to conjugate because the paragraph included quotations. We practiced changing the form of the verb from the third person singular to the second person singular (i.e., from "her" to "you") as required by the use of quotations.
