Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student received a school report for the previous quarter that suggested some areas for improvement. He is a very bright student and, in sessions, he demonstrates some excellent critical thinking and is able to clearly express himself. Such expression through writing is one of the key areas that he and I will continue to work on. We went over a few strategies to help with reading comprehension (reading aloud, keeping a plot notebook, etc.) and then discussed how to use evidence to answer a question and how to formulate an arguable thesis. In future sessions, we will continue to work on these skills."
"The student and I continued working through his grammar book and combining sentences using various parts of speech and strategies. We also did some reading comprehension practice per his mother's request."
"Today the student and I focused on his short story again. He had written some pages during the week, so he wrote more while I checked over his written pages and then we discussed some areas where he could improve. I was careful not to write anything for him, only fix some grammar and mechanics and point out to him where sentences were clunky, or should be rephrased. I also pointed out places in the story where he could add more description or where there was an illogical or not believable thing happening. He had a good attitude throughout. After discussing the story and rewrites, we went over a handout I found with tips on writing fight scenes. I think this will be very useful for him and his spy novel. I am hoping he finishes a significant amount of pages this evening so we have more to discuss at our next lesson tomorrow morning."
