Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The entire session was dedicated to reviewing Chapters 2, 3, and 4 for the student's upcoming History test this Friday."
"The student and I went over short-answer questions for hi exam. He did well on them but seemed to be afraid to deviate from a test-taking strategy he said his school stressed. He has been trained to answer questions by copying, often whole sentences, directly from passages. While it is important to be able to quote words and phrases from texts on a test, this strategy will let him down when answers require complex thought. We worked on forming answers in his own words and based on his own reasoning. The thing that most holds him back is his lack of familiarity with historical figures and events. I left with him with an exercise where he is to look up 15-20 historical figures and movements and write a basic description of each. I hope it will get him started on the path to having a better bank of historical knowledge that he can draw on during the exam."
"We worked on the student's presentation for her Texas revolution assignment. Our primary focus at the beginning of the lesson was the introduction of different tools that will assist her with carrying out her project. We detailed the colonization of North America by the European powers, explaining multiple perspectives and explicitly stating the cause of an event, which is something we discussed in great detail. We outlined a variety of key events that occurred during the Texas revolution. We laid out 3/4 of the student's idea for her presentation. I left her with a few maps and helpful links to aid her presentation."
