"We discussed Atomic Structure today. We began with a passage to warm us up on the Bohr theory. I used that as an opportunity to show the student how to identify the type of science passage type, and where to direct his focus when reading it. I also introduced passage mapping and equation analysis. From there, we discussed the nature of the atom, including various theories on its structure. We discussed the quantum model of the atom, and its implications for the organization of the periodic table. The student has a pretty good fund of general knowledge, but had a few gaps in his knowledge that prevented the true clarity of fundamental understanding. I addressed those as we came upon them."
"We continued with the topic of circular motion and spent more time on momentum and periodic movements. The student has a very good understanding of the material."
"The student and I met this evening to begin reviewing Newtonian mechanics, one of the areas she elected to cover after having taken a diagnostic test for her test prep course. We began with translational motion and then transitioned into forces. She has a fairly good conceptual understanding of this material, but still needs to really work on how to apply formulas related to these topics to answering questions. She is able to work through the material quickly, but we worked on slowing down as it sometimes caused her to get stuck mid-way through a question or to pick the opposite answer to the answer that was correct. I think she will be an easy student to work with in that she is smart and motivated. I left her with three passages, a topical exam, and a number of discrete test prep questions to practice the translational motion and force concepts with. This should give her a good sense of the possible difficulty levels, which can allow her to bring more questions to the table in our next sessions. We will meet next on 6/22, when we will continue our review of mechanics with work/energy and momentum/collisions."
