Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked through her social studies and English review packets and discussed pronouns and antecedents."
"During this session, I assisted the student with diagramming sentences. I instructed the student on how to identify the parts of the sentence and where to place those parts on the diagram. At the conclusion of the session, the student told me that she now understands how to diagram. My previous reviews with the student (parts of speech and parts of the sentence) prepared the student to be able to obtain a better understanding of sentence diagramming."
"Today, we reviewed the student's English vocabulary words. We made flash cards, and then I quizzed her on them. By the end of the session, she was able to correctly define each word."
"We started this session by discussing nouns and pronouns. I created an outline that charted each type of noun and pronoun. As we talked about each noun or pronoun, we practiced identifying nouns and their function within a sentence. The student recognized the nouns and their function with relative ease. After discussing nouns and pronouns, we delved a little into adjectives and adverbs. In order to see how adjectives and adverbs function in poetry and prose, we practiced writing a short poem. We both wrote a poem, read it aloud, and identified how those two parts of speech add a great deal to writing. She enjoyed being able to be creative during the session. After the English portion of the session, we discussed the beginning few chapters of her World History book. I wanted this last half of session to be more a discussion about humanity and its history, rather than a lecture. Overall, this session was extremely productive!"
"We continued to study for the student's final, which included developing the structure of an essay that will be included on the test. We read the short story "Thank You, Ma'am" and annotated it as well."
"The student and I spent time looking at vocabulary words. I had high frequency words on cards that he looked through to see which ones he didn't know and then we went over those coming up with definitions and practicing using the word in a sentence or two."
"We continued working on the essay on the movie Pleasantville. We were able to write one and a half body paragraphs and the beginning of the conclusion. The student needs to research one of the characters before class tomorrow so that she can complete the rest of the essay during class."
"The student read out loud to me. We discussed how to use context clues to help her figure out words instead of skipping them."
"During this session, the student and I focused on his SAT vocabulary words for his last test before the vacation."
"Completed make up work and homework - book report, adding and subtracting fractions, Egypt assignment/social studies."
"We did another chapter of Animal Farm and did more state assessment review. The student seems to be comfortable with the essay portion of the exam. I gave him a step by step guide on how to do the multiple choice questions and I did see a slight improvement after that. We are going to spend our next session working on the reading comprehension and listening sections."
"The student and I continued work on the SAT essay portion. We also began preparations for an upcoming essay on The Old Man and the Sea."
