Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I was impressed to see that the student has made a lot of improvements in her critical reading since the last time we met. We took a look at some vocabulary and a set of paired passages. She did very well on the passage and demonstrated a better understanding of it than she has in the past. We then did worked on some writing questions because we haven't in a long time. I had her read the questions and answers out loud to get used to making sure she read every word and understood its significance in the sentence. We finished up with some tough math questions, which she continues to show excellence in doing. For our next session, I have instructed her to do a full length test as stamina is one of her weak points. This will also give us an idea of where she stands with her score."
"The student and I worked on all of the sections, spending extra time on the essay and math portions. We came up with some good methods for the essay in particular."
"Today the student and I finished our in-depth coverage of SAT material with matrices and vectors! I wrote up some problems that made use of matrix techniques while highlighting some of the cool stuff that can be done with matrices and vectors. This included: The transitive properties of a matrix Eigenvalues/vectors (I just touched upon this one for fun, but didn't insist upon demonstrating how they are calculated). Rotation matrices Linear systems (including singular matrices and performing matrix inversions in the calculator) Points and shapes as vectors (and using the dot product to find angles) Vector valued functions (again, just touched upon this far enough to demonstrate the usefulness of dot products and to show an alternate formulation of parametric equations). For our last two meetings we plan to go over the 'diagnostic test' and more SAT related practice problems."
