Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I tackled math words problems almost exclusively. We worked through a number of them. We discussed converting inequality equations to absolute value equations, perhaps a rather minor function, but it hints at a deeper misunderstanding of absolute values. We will also work on that topic next week. We spent the last 30 minutes or so going over grammar homework that she had completed, including verb agreement, prepositional phrases and the appropriate use of semicolons. We will continue to develop a more systematic approach to these types of problems. She and I discussed having an earlier session this coming week (Wed.), skipping this weekend, and then returning to weekend sessions next week. Because of this, I will probably assign her minimal homework for Wednesday, and then a heavier load for the week and a half gap prior to our next meeting."
"We started off this week reviewing the questions that the three students wanted to review from their practice test. These were mostly math questions, ranging in topic from functions to geometry. After we finished those, we started doing mathematics review. Student #1 and student #2 wanted to focus more on geometry and statistics/probability, while student #3 wanted to talk more about numbers, operations, algebra, and functions. We covered chapters 15 and 16, which focused on the material that student #3 had requested. I assigned practice test #3 for homework."
"The student and I discussed the college entrance exam and how she needs to make an extra effort to stay on top and achieve a score commensurate with her very real ability. Her essay writing is improving, her style is just a little tighter with less run-ons and more clarity. All in all, she is doing well. She will receive a significantly better score than before."
