Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, the student and I kept on discussing on his assignments. We went over how to use the c compiler that his teacher required. We also went over how while loops, nested whiles, if/else statements, and for loops work. We created various programs dealing with finding the minimum in three numbers, raising a number to a power, and making sure that the user inputs the appropriate range of numbers (i.e. positive numbers). For our next session, the student is supposed to work on his other two homework assignments and be prepared to ask questions."
"We wrapped up the current programming assignment and will begin reviewing for the upcoming exam next session. I asked the student to finish reading Chapter 3 in his text and work on the practice exercises."
"Covered some points related to last assignment; function pointers and some additional discussion of linked list algorithms."
"The twins and I went over an assignment of theirs that wasn't compiling properly, and discovered that they were mistakenly calling one of their functions at the wrong time and with an incomplete argument. They now understand the mistake and how to avoid it in the future! We then looked at one of their upcoming assignments, which was a bit complicated but is pretty straightforward now that they understand what is being asked of them. I also helped one student rewrite some of her code that the professor asked her to redo in a different way. She now understands what the professor was asking for and knows how to use the modulo function, which is sure to prove useful in many math and coding problems in the future."
"We began the session discussing some of the basics of Java, including Java classes, program structure, data types, attributes, and methods. After that, we began a general review of the various assignment statements, loops, and other control statements. She agreed to try a homework problem for next time."
"We completed the read file / url assignment and worked on issues with the URL, adding proper exception handling for URLs, and printing out the proper number of lines from the bottom for the file and URL. We talked some about the next assignment, covering XML parsing and the final project."
