Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I helped the student complete an assignment that covered adding matrices, subtracting matrices, and scalar multiplication. We had spare time at the end of the session. I had her work a variety of problems from the chapter to review. I corrected anything that she made mistakes on. We also went over an ACT packet. I picked out the problems that were relevant and manageable for her. She struggles the most with word problems. She did well on the problems that were straightforward with what it was asking for. I hope to increase her confidence for the ACT."
"I introduced the student to fractions and, using various examples, explained that there is an infinite number of them. The student stated that he knew how to add fractions, but when presented with a problem involving only proper fractions, he couldn't successfully add them. Therefore, I explained how to use the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) to add them. The student practiced at least 6 separate problems involving proper and improper fractions and mixed numbers and 2 problems in subtraction using the LCM method. In the process, the student practiced long division and multiplication. I provided the student with assignments in addition and subtraction of fractions."
"I met with both students for the first time today. We worked on algebra, specifically translating word problems into equations, although the student started by working on combining fractions. Both still have a little trouble when it comes to understanding the purpose of variables and how coefficients work, but both were able to fix problems quickly. Our session got cut short, and so we only met for one hour."
"I met with him for our second session. He had a math quiz on Wednesday, so the tutoring session was mainly focused on the math subjects that would appear on his quiz. He insisted that he did not need to study for the quiz, but as we reviewed each subject, there was definitely room for improvement. I plan to continue encouraging him to read while also preparing him for any upcoming exams or quizzes that he may have. I definitely still encourage him to engage in independent reading and hope that we can get him started on a book series."
"I met with the student. We spent the first half of the session reviewing base concepts of adding up like terms and distribution. During the second half, we worked out a review sheet for his test scheduled for Monday."
"I provided help and support in his homework and reviewed his study guide in preparation for his test. The concepts covered were Shrinking and Stretching and Similar Figures. He struggled a bit to find a missing length of a side of a figure similar to another figure. I showed him how to use a ratio/proportion to solve for the unknown side. He was able to figure it out quickly. He will continue to study and work on problems to get ready for his test."
