"The student and I met for the first time this past Saturday at his apartment. The student familiarized me with his basic background regarding standardized testing. We walked a bit through his PSAT scores and determined areas in which we need to work as geometry, vocabulary, and managing time during the test as best as possible. The student is an incredibly gifted student who is already well on his way to a very high score on the SAT. With his college aspirations, he wants to give himself the best possible chance for admission to elite universities. We then proceeded to work through a few practice problems in SAT Math, in a SAT prep book that I brought with me. We particularly focused on analyzing what each math problem is actually looking for: often there is extraneous information in the wording of the question geared toward leading the test-taker astray. After working through a few different types of questions -- mostly algebra problems, some geometry problems -- the student showed improvement at basic analysis of the questions. What he struggled with the most were the factoring problems. Then we moved on to SAT verbal practice, particularly vocabulary. We worked through some synonym problems and looked at different ways to study vocabulary. The student impressed me with his skills in this area, and I am sure he will improve in this quickly. We finished our session with a little SAT writing practice. The student did very well in this regard. I did not leave him with any extra work. Neither one of us left with any concerns from this session. I look forward to working with him again."
