Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We started by reviewing the essay she wrote during the last session. She improved her argument structure and choice of counterarguments. We talked about ways that she can further improve by signaling with transition phrases. For the remainder of the session, we focused mostly on the science section, as her science score is consistently lower than her other subscores and she is very worried about improving in this area. She does very well on passages that use tables and simple line charts, but has difficulty with ones where she has to use diagrams of the experiment or graphs with three or more variables listed. She also struggles a little with passages that require her to use a chemistry equation. We went over what the ACT expects her to know about chemistry (e.g., how is decomposition shown as an equation). We also discussed using reading strategies to help with the conflicting viewpoints passage and how identify the key words when skimming for specific answers. Overall, she had a good understanding of how to find the answers. I suggested that she do passages that include charts first, then do the ones that include diagrams, then save conflicting viewpoints passages for last when she takes the ACT this Saturday. We took a look at one reading passage before ending."
"The student and I reviewed the structure of the test and basic strategies in our first session. We so talked through her goals and where she feels she is challenged. We ended with a vocab review, which she nailed!"
"Today was the student's last session so we worked on whatever she chose. She completed an entire section of the ACT science and about a third of a section of the ACT math."
