"We worked primarily on changing mixed numbers to fractions and vice versa. She and her mom report that she has been working on some multiplication games to strengthen her memorization of multiplication tables, but this does not appear to be improving her skills, so I suggested to mom that they get some old school flash cards. I also suggested doing in person sessions monthly since I think this would be a little more efficient. She did show very good concentration and effort throughout the session, but her multiplication weaknesses are a barrier in the material we are focusing on."
"We worked through several problems simplifying exponent and radical expressions with all operations. We started simple, then worked up to more complicated rational expressions involving mixed roots, compound fractions, and multiple variables. I'd work very closely along with the student, almost doing the whole problem myself at first. Then I'd have him try more while I backed off only giving him hints and reminders. By the time we got to a third problem, he was doing all the work himself. Then we'd do another to cement his skills. This pattern ensued 5 times, as the problems added another operation. I emphasized that we need to think of how a number can be factorized into something involving a square or cube. We also reviewed factorization, and he was able to apply this readily after some guidance as well. He worked very hard during this session, and I applaud him for recognizing that he needed to practice these types of problems even though they were not assigned."
"We went over confidence intervals for the test tomorrow. She is very prepared for the test and knows CI's. We went over word problems that might be problematic."
"We went over his math test from last week then reviewed last night's homework. He is transitioning into exponents. Everything he missed on the test could have been fixed by double-checking his answers to the original problems; I intend to really work on that in the weeks to come. He seems to understand the basics of exponents, but we might need to review Order of Operations in our next sessions. All in all, a lovely session. He had a high school interview before our session, and it sounds like it went really well."
"Today the student and I covered pre-algebra concepts. She understood the process of solving the problems in her homework. Later, we reviewed strategies to find common denominators and how to solve for X."
"This session covered unit circle and binomial expansion. We reviewed a resource for the unit circle, the basic concept, use of Pythagoras to derive basic identity of sin^2 +Cos^2 =1 and also the sin and cos of 30, 45, and 60 degrees. Use of radian measure for angles and arcs. The student completed some exercise questions on this subject. For binomial expansions, we covered Pascal's triangle, and the basic expansion of (a+b)^n. Additionally we covered combinations -- selections of r items from n total items, using factorial expressions."
